general aspects
A two-stage project:
The project involves the construction of a temporary market in order to reallocate the food stores of Horta’s historic market during its refurbishment works. This new market will be placed on an empty site, located at the end point of the Parc de les Rieres and where two important arteries of urban and ecosystemic growth converge. The project anticipates the transformation of this non-place as a future public space through a strategy in two times: present and future.
2023
First, the seven meters heigh wooden structure acts as a space-generating element and support for the current roof of the provisional market, based on a grid of pillars and beams that allow the market programme to be well adapted. The market prioritises natural environmental conditions to improve the interior comfort: natural lighting is enhanced thanks to the glazed perimeter envelope, which allows for cross ventilation and natural air renewal thanks to CO2 sensors that trigger the opening of windows.
2030
The structure is designed to be reused in the future as an urban element once the refurbishment work on the old market has been completed. The modular wooden structure that supports the roof of the sales room will remain in place and will be reconverted into a pergola, a climatic shelter that provides a shaded space between Lisbon and Oporto streets, thus creating a new public space for the neighbourhood.
about the category
The market prioritises natural environmental conditions to improve the comfort of traders and shoppers. Natural lighting is enhanced thanks to the glazed perimeter envelope which, at the same time, allows for cross ventilation and natural air renewal thanks to the CO2 sensors that trigger the opening of the perimeter windows.
Although the market is conceived as a temporary building, it is designed to last over time once the market is no longer in use. The future reuse of the structure, as well as the possible reuse of the enclosures and interior fittings, means a great economic saving in the dismantling and, at the same time, an appropriation of the space by the neighbours, who will see how the structure that has been used to house the temporary market means an improvement in the future urban environment.
