general aspects
casa flix is an attic of a 42m2 first-floor flat located on the sixth floor in a building in the center of Madrid, very close to the busy Callao square.
With an initial layout of the house organized into two rooms, a rectangular one of 10x4 meters and a square one of 3x3 meters, both with sloping roofs but with slopes in different directions, this house of minimum dimensions seeks to make the living space an optimal, flexible, diverse and bright place from its use in plan, but especially from the occupation of the section.
For this purpose, a house is designed to be divided into four spatial areas: four successive rooms connected physically and visually that correspond, from north to south, with the bedroom/dressing room, the entrance, the workspace/bathroom, and the kitchen/living/dining room.
The entrance is a long, narrow space with an exterior terrace and an interior blue tunnel featuring a metal shelf and circular window. The central bathroom is divided into separate areas for the sink, toilet, and shower, maximizing space and privacy. The sink and toilet are hidden behind mirrored panels, accessed through a secret door, creating visual depth with reflective surfaces.
The shower is enclosed by a glass block wall that provides natural light and privacy. The kitchen is a compact 5.5-meter-long unit with hidden storage, finished in a matte yellow to brighten the house.
To maximize natural light and ventilation, two additional roof windows were added, one in the bedroom and one in the living room, and the entrance door was replaced with a glass door. The furniture on a continuous porcelain floor is minimal but precise, defining each space.
At night, the shower glows like a lantern, and the house, with its soft lighting and light furniture, appears to float under the sloping roof. From the bed, through the roof windows, you can see the iconic Schweppes sign on Gran Vía, creating a view that connects Madrid to the sky.
about the category
THE HOUSE IS A SHELTER
The house understood as a physically built space, has acquired multiple formalizations according to different civilizations as a response to different natural and cultural environments and their different forms of social organizations.
However, behind this diversity, there is a common denominator, and it is the materialization of the concept of shelter.
Defined by many anthropologists and historians as a microcosm, domestic space has ceased to be a mere continent to become a complex content that houses a multitude of layers and functions and, therefore, meanings.
The house is no longer a machine for inhabiting but a living place. In an era like ours where it seems that time has been prioritized to the detriment of space and, increasingly, the digital over the physical, casa flix is presented as an urban refuge; an oasis of optimism and rest in the center of the city reflecting the way of life of its inhabitant: Roberto; a place of reduced dimensions that not only serves to shelter from the weather or to be safe but a space where to feel safe.
This place for life is a set of concatenated spaces that generate an undifferentiated and bright atmosphere, full of reflections built with architectural, but also phenomenological materials that will undoubtedly serve, and during a stage of Roberto's life, as his refuge.
