general aspects
La Roma Norte is a neighborhood in Mexico City full of history and movement, known for its cultural, gastronomic and architectural landmarks. La Taquería «Los Alexis» is located on Chiapas Street, a space that pays homage to informal commerce by reinterpreting a street changarro within its commercial premises, with a simple menu of two tacos, the Taurinos and the Asada.
The project generates a confluence of colors, textures and aromas, which within a 15m² space it creates a feeling of estrangement that decontextualizes us from the environment to have a different gastronomic experience.
The interior design is composed by the broken mosaic that surrounds the kitchen, making it the centerpiece of the space. It is designed with the Art Deco inspiration of the Roma neighborhood and colors that contrast with the background, highlighting the space with its curved and linear design that through the use of lighting, evokes an atmosphere that generates a range of contrasts.
about the category
Las Taquerías are an essential part of Mexican cultural life, tacos are the traditional Mexican fast food. Their versatility allows these delicacies to be enjoyed everywhere, in a subway station, in an alley, in a square or even in the usual Taqueria.
Los Alexis is a traditional Mexican taqueria in a space of just 15 sqm. Its direct connection to the street extends the interior area activating the immediate context and inviting passers-by to come in and have a close relationship with the “taquero” (the cook).
The taquero is the inhabitant in charge of the space: he receives the guests, prepares the food, charges the bills and maintains their spot clean. With the simple phrase of “dos tacos con todo, güero?” he triggers the place and the act of eating becomes a collective activity that gathers us as a community and as Mexicans.
