general aspects
The Project for this extension and reform of a 1930 summer house located next to the Sant Cugat golf club, has been proposed from the consideration of two key elements defined by the context.
1. The urban rhythm of the street.
The project is located in the old Villà street that starts from the Romanesque cloister of the historic center of Sant Cugat. The project is located not in the old part of the city but where the density of the street begins to lose continuity and density. An area in which the urban façade is defined by having isolated houses with very narrow gardens between neighbors. So this is not a location, of the classic European street with a thick and continuous suburban structure, nor is it the typical spongy street of a low-intensity garden city. The area of Villà street where the project is located is characterized by having a particular urban rhythm, a strange urban morphology of a high-density garden city. Isolated houses separated by thin landscaped thresholds.
2. Trees and golf course
The house has a particular location defined by having, simultaneously, an urban and natural character. The proximity of the golf course and its large centenary trees transform a part of the consolidated city as an urban nucleus into a continuous and built-up environment that is green and natural at the same time.
- The project
The extension arises from the idea of occupying the original vacant space that remains between the summer house and the golf clubhouse. Occupying this empty space allows us to maintain and intensify the porous and narrow urban rhythm that defines Villà street. A new small light wooden house addition, which follows the morphology of the neighboring houses, is placed among ancient trees above a permeable concrete structure.

- The old and the new. Ceilings, Interior Space
The decision not to tear down the existing house and to renovate it has allowed building a continuous dialogue between the old and the new. The project proposes fluid integration between the existing house and the new extension. This is not a reform proposal defining the magic dividing line between the old and the new. The project is based on the construction of a natural dialogue between different constructions, but also similar. To fix the continuity of the urban rhythm of the street and taking care of the century trees has made it possible to form a dialogue with the environment and define, at the same time, a solution for the interior space of the house consisting in designing of the ceilings of both buildings. Renovating and maintaining the original construction has made it possible to recover the value of the ceiling for defining the conditions of the interior space. It seems that modern architecture has forgotten the use and meaning of the ceiling as a constitutive element to set the character of the space. Preserving an old house and valuing the 3,5-meter height has driven us to review the importance of the roof in defining the space. This project is not a game of opposites. A competition of facing modern low, white, plain, and abstract ceilings with old high ceilings colored with moldings. It is a permanent dialogue between the old and the new thanks to the continuity of spaces defined by different types of ceilings. Each room in the house is defined by a ceiling that determines it. As if it were a hat, each space, each place is defined by its ceiling. A single abstract and smooth solution of continuous plasterboard false ceilings has not been proposed. Each room in the house has a different ceiling that defines it. The project which began establishing a solution of continuity with the context finally determines a structural solution that fixes a ceiling condition.
