Rehabilitation, refurbishment, extension and urbanization of a new british centre in Gandia (Spain).
The aim of the project is to reform and old existing building and to project an extension with the same architectural language in order to create a nice atmosphere for the students.
Since the beggining we like the idea of giving the students the main role and putting the project as an atemporary blank page where things happens. For us architecture is made of light both natural and artificial and this is present in all the parts of our project.
The materials that appear in the project are white alluminium, beech wood and glass plus the use of articicial light as linear beams on the facade and the inside.
The client asked us to make the building relevant not just during the day but during the night, so when the school is closed it has to be recognizable from the surroundings. That was a reason to take into special consideration as the building is placed in an industrial area next to the city of Gandia, so we decided the use of leds in the new alluminium facade to make the building smoothly appear during the evenings. For us the construction details have been really important in order to solve patologies from the part of the existing building and improving the energy efficiency for the future. We think good architecture has to be with us since we are kids and that is what we have tried to do.
During the whole process of a project light has to bee one of the main factors that has to create the atmospheres in spaces. Nowadays artificial light is becoming more and more eficient and pure as natural light. We can not forget that light shapes forms and atmospheres of our buildings and also of our collective buildings in order to create places where is easy to live.
This is one of the reasons that we wanted to present our project to this competition, as we think we have worked with the idea of transforming spaces through light.
